In 2012, after forty years of hand-crafting wrought iron, Joe decided to sell the business. Joe had a good team of designers, fabricators, and installers focused entirely on ornamental wrought iron. Joe loved his “family” and wanted to sell the business to an experienced craftsman.
Jim Peterson, the owner of a Michigan company with a very similar vision and a blacksmith himself, purchased The Coast Welding Company from Joe, and Coast Iron Works was born. Jim retained all the talented employees as well as upgrading the welding and fabrication equipment. The company continues today with a near century-old commitment to excellence through high-quality, creative design, and impeccable craftsmanship.

Coast Iron Works began in 1914 as a blacksmith shop, shoeing horses and fixing fishing boats. This was the time when there was a big transition from wind and horse power to steam engines for boats and the automobile. It was a good time to be a blacksmith, as many of the skills were transferable to this new age of invention. It was a time when we were only second in importance to the Town Doctor in San Pedro!
Today, we specialize in custom fabricated metal. (Sorry, we are out of the horseshoe business!) We design, fabricate, and install the large variety of items you can see here in our Galleries.

Whether you’re interested in an automatic electric gate that you can open with your iPhone™ or an elegant spiral staircase, Coast Iron Works has you covered. We specialize in the hard to make and challenging projects for the discerning customer. We also enjoy making nice useful railings and gates for the cost conscious neighbor.

We’re licensed and insured contractors in the state of California (CSLB #975169); please check us out on the State of California website. Our Shop here in Wilmington, California, uses the latest welding and fabrication equipment.

Our Studio has many samples and there is a lot to see. We live on our reputation and most of our business is referrals and repeat customers. Our staff is courteous, professional, and punctual. You can count on us to execute your project. We do what we say and say what we do.
